upei vs smu. bringing the electricity back to pei!

before i get to the men’s game, i just want to say that one of the UPEI women’s basketball coaches has captured my newly created “Least Useful Thing to Scream at a Player” Award. the gem that he shouted to garner the award? “come on! get the ball!” yes, get the ball. and get the ball they did, as the women won their game against SMU, 61 - 58.

i have to admit that i didn’t take many notes throughout the men’s game. i was busy playing the “how many times does the ref miss calling three-in-the-key?” game for most of the first half. four times, if you’re curious.

Blinded by the shiny Golden Bears

I’d imagine that if you were playing basketball (any sport, really) against a team of Golden Bears, you wouldn’t feel too threatened. They’d be all shiny, the thought of their cash value might distract you and then the next thing you know, Alex Steele is leading a 2-on-1 break, you’re the odd guy back and as he throws the ball off the glass, he kind of boxes you out/runs into you and gets you out of the way for Andrew Parker to crush the ball home.

That might not be exactly how it went down in Vancouver tonight, but the end result is this: Alberta 80, UBC 75.

Something to ponder: the Bears are the only team in Canada West to have won games against Brandon, UBC, Calgary, Saskatchewan and Vic this year. That’s impressive.

Gasol’s a Laker

Good work, Memphis Grizzlies. You got the worst first overall pick in recent memory to go with the worst second overall pick in recent memory. Your roster only needs Mike Dunleavy Jr, Marcus Fizer and Skita. Then you will have the worst starting five in the league. Clearly that is your goal.

What are your thoughts on the trade?

Where to send Jason Kidd

I’m busy and need to post quickly, but I really wanted to get something on here about J-Kidd’s recent trade demand. Here’s an email exchange between Danny and I from this morning. Note: if this is garbled I’ll fix it in an hour or two: Keep reading →

Capital Hoops Classic aka A Long Long Bus Ride From Civilization (but just minutes from Carleton)

Sorry for this much delayed post, but the last while has been pretty crazy for me. Also, when i first was going to the Capital Hoops Classic it was to be as a reporter who would have internet access and be live blogging the game. Yeah, not so much.

Anyhow, yesterday marked the second Capital Hoops Classic between the top ranked Carleton Ravens and the #7 Ottawa Gee-Gees. Or, as my company for the evening NTV (like the TV station, just more interesting) put it between Hospitality Industry U and Academic University. Given that the Gee-Gees have played pretty much the same schedule as the Ravens and faired pretty well i was looking forward to see just where Ottawa truly sat.

Celtics - Magic game notes

Basketball on ABC…on Sundays! This means the season is about half-way over and as ol’ Jim Ross would say, “Business is picking up!”

The Magic are hosting the Celtics and that means one thing: Brian Scalabrine is in HD! KG is out tonight with an abdominal strain. Doc Rivers said at the first quarter break that he had to break the news to Garnett that he couldn’t play today and KG still hadn’t come out of the locker room because he was so upset. I like that dedication. Keep reading →

All-star weekend…no highlights

I haven’t seen basketball highlights in three days. There are a few reasons for this, but mainly it’s because I’ve only been using three channels to check scores and all of them are Canadian. Keep reading →

upei vs dalhousie, episode two. attack of the clones… nobody liked that movie.

i arrive late again. just as i get comfortable in my seat, i look up to see Dalhousie’s Andrew Sullivan foul Andrew Black. it’s not your average foul; Sullivan grabs Black’s shoulders and drags him to the floor just as he is about to make a basket. it’s brutal to watch. the entire UPEI bench and the crowd start yelling in protest and it feels like an eternity before the refs call a foul. Black bounces back up and readies himself at the line while i am left to wonder “why the hell was that not considered a flagrant foul?”

as i will soon learn, questionable refereeing is the one consistent part of this game. neither team is playing very well. . .and i’m not sure if the score is as close as it is because UPEI is playing better or because Dalhousie is playing worse. at one point UPEI was ahead by seven points, but by the half time break the score is UPEI 37 - Dal 38.

upei vs dalhousie, episode one. nails? bite em if you got em.

i want to take back every sarcastic or “rude” comment i’ve ever made about UPEI Men’s Basketball Coach Matthew Davies. tonight he is the best coach in the whole wide WORLD. it is the fourth quarter and no more than fifteen seconds into a time-out he called, he has thrown a hissy fit and walked away from his team. he is refusing to even make eye contact with them!!!! that’s a great coaching move on Mister Davies’ part. he must have known that his trite coaching schpeels would have accomplished nothing during this timeout. thus, he just walked away. great coaching move. when you can’t coach, just don’t! sit and pout on a chair and, whatever you do, do NOT make eye contact with those jerk “players.” Mister Davies. . .you’re more clever than i thought.

the boys chat amongst themselves, giving tips and sharing insights on the opposition, and when they return from the timeout they play some of the best basketball they’ve played all night. take that, you whiny baby of a coach.

but i’m waaay ahead of myself. what about the first, second and third quarters?

Self-promotion Friday, why I can’t take the Heat and Pros vs. Joes

Bears basketball heads into Saskatchewan this weekend, and I previewed it for the Journal. Alex Steele has been playing fantastic ball the last few weeks and I wanted to see what goes through his head when he’s in one of his zones. When he’s on his game, there isn’t a player in the country who can stop him. Keep reading →
